FLOORS & WALLS

HOW TO USE A WATER-BASED POLYURETHANE (PU) SEALEr

A PU sealer, short for polyurethane sealer, is a protective coating used to seal and protect surfaces like concrete, screeds, wood, and existing floor coatings. It forms a durable, clear film that enhances the appearance of the surface while protecting it from wear, stains, moisture, and chemicals.

Polished interiors

Offers the perfect balance between durability and aesthetics, giving floors a smooth,

cleanable finish in matt, satin, or gloss.

What it does

This type of sealer acts as a protective shield over a surface. Once applied, it hardens to create a tough, flexible layer that resists:

  • Abrasion and scratching
  • Chemical spills and stains
  • Moisture and UV damage
  • General wear from foot or vehicle traffic

2 Types of PU sealers

Water-based PU sealers: low odour, eco-friendly, quick-drying, and non-yellowing. Ideal for both interior and exterior use.

Solvent-based PU sealers: very tough and chemical-resistant, but have stronger fumes and longer drying times.

4 Reasons to choose a water-based PU sealer

  1. Eco-friendly and low odour
With fewer Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), and minimal fumes, water-based polyurethane sealers are safer for you and the environment. They’re perfect for both residential and commercial interiors where air quality matters.

  1. Fast drying, easy application

Projects move faster with a quick-drying formula that allows multiple coats in a single day. It is beneficial to choose a product with a smooth, self-levelling consistency to ensure an even finish.

  1. Durable and UV resistant

A quality sealer will stand up to heavy traffic, abrasion, and sunlight — maintaining its clarity and performance even in bright, exposed areas.

  1. Crystal-clear finish
Unlike solvent-based alternatives that can yellow over time, a water-based PU sealer enhances the natural beauty of your floors with a long-lasting, non-yellowing finish.

PU sealers are commonly applied to:

  • Concrete floors (industrial, commercial, and residential)
  • Cement screeds and self-levelling compounds
  • Wood floors, epoxy or polyurethane flooring systems

Well-suited to light-coloured surfaces like concrete, wood or stone
